Ever wonder what the process is to get started with some pretty awesome training? Well we thought it would be helpful to let you know what you can expect on the journey to creating your own Total Dog!
First, fill out a contact form or call your local Total Dog! trainer.
Second, schedule your free demonstration/evaluation to where your trainer can meet you and your dog, discuss your unique needs, and formulate a plan for your success. We will walk you through all of the different training programs, options on methodologies, and even demonstrate part of that plan with your dog!
First, we meet for Lesson One. This and the next have a lot of information, so please feel free to take notes, audio notes or video. Our training model is to first explain what we are going to do and why, then we show you, and then we have you continue on.
Next, you have homework between lessons. We make sure that you are clear on the tasks and make sure that you are practicing that before we leave.
Next, we schedule our next lesson. Typically they are about a week apart, as we have found that going every other week tends to allow things to be put off, and twice a week can be information overload for the dog, owner or both. If, however, you and your dog can move at an accelerated pace, then we can certainly adjust the frequency of the lessons.
We continue this process until…
Here we begin proofing behaviors. Your dog needs to be able to perform the trained tasks regardless of the Four Variables of Proofing, which are Distance, Duration, Distraction and Location.
Then we start checking off our list of learned behaviors until you are satisfied with the results!
1. If you signed up for a Board and Train (Bootcamp) option, then most of this is already done for you. We do as many follow up lessons as needed to help the dog understand that the rules followed them from our home back to yours.
2. If you signed up for a finite number of lessons, i.e. 3 Lesson Primer or 8 lesson package, then we are focusing on particular behaviors and we may add time between the lessons for you to be prepared for the next lesson.
Your Total Dog! Trainer will be accessible via text, phone or email. ***HINT*** Email is great when you are asking training questions, in that you can reference written word instead of trying to remember detailed training ideas.
